Qualifying for SSDI
If you were working and getting a regular paycheck, you were paying into Social Security. In order to qualify for SSDI, your disability must be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. In addition, you must have worked 5 years out of the 10 years prior to the onset of your disability. This timeframe may vary depending on your age. You will continue to be eligible to apply for SSDI benefits for five years after you stop working.
Once you begin receiving benefits, you will receive a monthly check. The amount of the check will depend on how long you worked and how much you made.
